Whiskey Society at Talking Rock

We get a lot of questions about the Whiskey Society at Talking Rock so we sat down with Chris, the food and beverage director, to learn a little more about what this gentleman’s club (ladies are also welcome) is all about.

Question 1: How did the Whiskey Society at Talking Rock begin?
“The Whiskey Society started one day when a bunch of guys were sitting at the bar after golf, and I mentioned something about the wine club tasting that afternoon. One of the guys asked what we do for whiskey drinkers and another guy spouted up ‘I’ll tell ya what they do, not a F#@&ing thing!’ Those two guys were the first two members of the Whiskey Society, and it started that day.”

Question 2: How do you join, and what does it cost to be a member?
“The cost is $25/quarter – same as Beer Club and Wine Club. In order to be a member, you must already be a member of Talking Rock, however that is the only requirement and we do not have a limit of how many members are a part of the group at a time.”

Question 3: When, and how often do you meet?
“There is a tasting scheduled every month, and I add in six to eight additional tastings each year as things become available. I also hold special whiskies that are either very hard to get, or very expensive, that are available only to Whiskey Society members.”

Question 4: What exactly do you do when the Whiskey Society meets?
“The purpose is to see/taste new whiskies, bourbons, and now we include other spirits as well.”
Question 5: How many bottles do you normally taste at each event?
“Each tasting will feature anywhere from 5-12 different whiskies.”

Question 6: Who selects the whiskey?
“I usually get with the distributor and select items for tastings.”
Question 7: What are some of the group’s favorite whiskeys right now?
“Super popular right now is Dalmore 15-yr Single Malt Scotch, Brenne French Single Malt, and Elmer T Lee Bourbon, to name a couple.”

Question 8: Does the group rate the whiskey they try?
“They don’t really ‘rate’ by definition but they do buy ones they like and we carry in-house what they like to drink.”

Question 9: What are some of your favorite whiskey spots (other than Morgan’s at Talking Rock)?
“Best Whiskey Bar I’ve seen lately is at the Westin Kierland in Scottsdale.”
